If you are like most people, you schedule a visit to the dentists office for a general cleaning twice a year. For a lot of people, the general teeth cleaning visit is the only time they go to a dentists. Unsurprisingly, they are unaware of the wide variety of services under the dentistry umbrella.

One of the most common dental needs in America is for cosmetic dentistry. Cosmetic dentistry is all of the dental services that improves the appearance of an individuals teeth or gum. This does not mean that the dental work performed will also improve the function of these vital parts of the mouth. Cosmetic dentistry is superficial, it is all about making your smile more attractive. According to wikipedia, many dentist will market themselves as cosmetic dentists, however the American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a specialty.

Cosmetic dentistry can involve a variety of different dental procedures. Some of the most common forms of dental procedure are teeth whitening, bonding, veneers, and crowns.

Teeth Whitening

This one is pretty self explanatory, it is a procedure performed in order to whiten a patients teeth to give them a prettier smile. There are two main methods used by dentists in order to whiten teeth. The first is by doing so in office with a bleaching whitening solution. Your dentist may also offer you use of the whitening solution at home, but this method will take several weeks. Keep in mind that whitening your teeth is not a substitute for brushing, you will still need to brush twice daily.

Bonding is the dental practice of closing gaps in between teeth, and fixing chipped, broken, stained, and cracked teeth. Bonding is usually performed during a single visit to your cosmetic dentist.

Veneers are custom shells made of porcelain that are made to cover the front sides of teeth in order to change their color and shape. While they serve a similar purpose to bonding, veneers are preferable because they provide a superior appearance and they are longer lasting. This procedure will take two visits to the dentists, one for the dentists to make impressions of your teeth, and a second visit to have them inserted after they are made in a lab.

Unlike veneers which only partially cover teeth, crowns completely cover the whole tooth. Crowns are meant to restore a normal shape and appearance to your teeth. If they are taken care of, permanent crowns can have a very long life, much longer than veneers and bonding. Due to this, they are also considerably more expensive.

There are several other methods dentist can employ in order to make a smile more beautiful, however these four options are the most common methods in use today. If you ever are unsatisfied with the appearance of your smile, you should consider looking into cosmetic dentistry today.
